What is Colonoscopy Test?

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the large intestine and rectum.

This test can help detect abnormal growths, polyps, and other potential issues within the colon, allowing for early diagnosis and treatment of conditions.

This blog will look at one of the most effective diagnostic tests, a Colonoscopy.

We will also shed some light on who should get this test done and how this test should be done. We will also explain what is the post-result follow-up and treatment planning after the test.

Let’s begin with the basics.

What is Colonoscopy?

What is Colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a test performed to analyze your large intestine,  especially to diagnose Cancer.

During this test, a small camera connected to a scope or a fiber optic cable is inserted into your intestine via the Anal canal.

This camera is used to identify any abnormal changes in your large intestine.

If the doctor finds out some abnormalities, they may recommend a biopsy test .This test can prove extremely helpful in identifying multiple benign diseases along with Cancer.

Likewise, your doctor can identify multiple health conditions like Ulcerative Colitis, Colonic Polyps, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Post-test treatments

A lot of conditions identified during the Colonoscopy can be handled with medical management.

But, on the contrary, some conditions might need immediate treatment. For example, conditions like Colonic Polyps and  Inflammatory Bowel Diseases can be easily managed with medications.

But follow-ups in these treatments are vital as your medications must be optimized based on your changing health conditions.

Who should get Colonoscopy test?

In general, every individual above 50 should get a Colonoscopy test every 5 years. But if you have a family history of  Rectal or Colon Cancer, you must get Colonoscopy regularly.

Moreover, if your blood relative was diagnosed with Cancer at 55, you must get Colonoscopy at 45. In short, you should get the test 10 years earlier.

What to expect during the test?

As mentioned above, a camera is inserted in your large intestine.

The visuals of your intestine’s internal structure are displayed on a large screen. It gives a clear picture of your mucosa and tissue.

If your doctor finds any abnormality or tumor-like structure, they will take a small sample for the biopsy. Then, further treatment is planned based on the biopsy results.

It’s important to note here that Colonoscopy can be curative too. For e.g., if there is a big polyp in the large intestine, it can be removed during the Colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy is one of the best ways to identify any issues with your large intestine.

In addition, it helps diagnose severe conditions like Cancer at an early stage, offering better treatment options.
