Reconstruction

Breast cancer already puts your body through a lot. Wanting to feel comfortable in it again is a very normal thought. There is no right or wrong reason to consider breast reconstruction. It is simply your choice.

At SSO Hospital, we know this is an intimate and emotional decision. Our role is to support you, not rush you. From the first conversation, we focus on listening, clearly explaining options, and planning reconstruction around your cancer treatment.

What is breast reconstruction surgery?

Breast reconstruction surgery is a procedure that restores the appearance of the breast after surgery for breast cancer. It is usually done after a mastectomy to recreate a breast mound and improve symmetry with the other breast.

The surgery may involve implants, tissue taken from your own body, or a combination of both. Depending on your cancer treatment plan and personal choice, reconstruction can be performed at the same time as breast surgery or planned for a later stage.

Types
Procedure
Recovery

There are different types of breast reconstruction, and the correct option depends on your body, your cancer treatment, and what feels right for you.

Implant-based reconstruction:
Uses a breast implant to recreate the breast shape, sometimes in stages. Often recommended when there is sufficient healthy skin and when cancer treatment plans permit implants.

Tissue-based reconstruction:
Uses tissue taken from another part of your body, such as the abdomen or back. This is suggested for patients who prefer a more natural feel or when implants may not be suitable.

Combined reconstruction:
Uses both your own tissue and an implant. This is usually considered when extra volume or shape support is needed to achieve a balanced result.

At SSO Hospital, your care is planned in collaboration with cancer surgeons and reconstruction specialists. They take the time to understand your treatment, your body, and your concerns before guiding you towards the option that is right for you.

How breast reconstruction is carried out

Breast reconstruction is usually planned in stages. The exact steps depend on the type of reconstruction and your cancer treatment, but the process generally follows this path:

Before the surgery
You will have a detailed consultation where your oncologist reviews your cancer treatment plan, examines you, and discusses reconstruction options. This is when timing, expected outcomes, and recovery are explained clearly. Pre-surgery tests are conducted, and you are guided on preparation, including any necessary medications and lifestyle adjustments.

During the surgery
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. Surgery can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on whether implants, your own tissue, or a combination is used, and whether reconstruction is done at the same time as cancer surgery.

After the surgery
You will be monitored closely as you recover. Drains may be placed temporarily, and the hospital stay depends on the type of reconstruction. Follow-up visits are planned to assess healing and guide the next steps, if further treatment is needed.

Recovery and results timeline

Healing after breast reconstruction is not instant, and that is completely normal. Most people are able to return to light daily activities within a few weeks, while the body continues to heal over several months. Changes in shape, softness, and overall appearance happen gradually as everything settles.

In the weeks following surgery, you may notice a few changes that can feel worrying at first, but are usually part of normal healing.

Swelling or a feeling of tightness in the breast

Some discomfort or soreness, especially early on

Bruising or numb areas around the breast or donor site

Tiredness as your body recovers

Scars that look more noticeable before they fade with time

Your care team will check in regularly, guide you on what to do and what to avoid, and support you through each stage of recovery.

Risks and Complications

Every surgery carries some level of risk, and breast reconstruction is no different. Having clear information can make the decision feel less overwhelming.

Some possible risks include:

  • Infection or delayed wound healing
  • Bleeding or fluid build-up around the surgical area
  • Changes in sensation, including numbness
  • Implant-related issues, if implants are used
  • Healing concerns in tissue-based reconstruction
  • Effects of radiation therapy on healing or final results

Care at SSO Hospital is planned with safety as the first priority. Every reconstruction is carefully aligned with your cancer treatment, and you are closely supported before, during, and after surgery to ensure any concerns are addressed early.

Why Choose SSO Hospitals?

Breast reconstruction works best when it is carefully planned and properly supported. At SSO Hospital, the focus is on doing what is right for your body, your cancer treatment, and your recovery.

  • All reconstruction options are available: Both implant reconstruction and flap reconstruction are offered, allowing for a choice based on suitability rather than limitations.
  • Decisions made with cancer care in mind: Reconstruction is planned after reviewing the cancer size, location, type of breast surgery, and any further treatment needed.
  • Careful assessment before surgery: Overall health, smoking and drinking habits, and recovery factors are evaluated to minimise risks and support optimal healing.
  • Personalised planning: Factors like body type, tissue availability, and whether one or both breasts need reconstruction are taken into account.
  • Clear recovery guidance: Movement is encouraged early under supervision. Most patients stay in the hospital for around 2 to 3 days and receive clear follow-up advice after discharge.
  • Long-term follow-up and support: Patients are guided on regular check-ups, self-examination, and ongoing breast health after reconstruction.
