at SSO Hospitals: Where Precision Meets Care

With gastrointestinal cancer, the right treatment matters as much as early diagnosis itself. Advanced laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique to treat cancer effectively while reducing trauma to the body.

At SSO Hospitals, we bring this advanced approach to life through specialised expertise and cutting-edge technology. Our surgical oncologists focus exclusively on gastrointestinal cancers, combining years of experience with precise expertise to ensure faster recovery and better outcomes.

Overview

Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to remove cancerous tissue. For cancers affecting the stomach, colon, rectum, or oesophagus, it targets the tumour directly while protecting healthy tissue around it and minimising trauma to your body. It works best when cancer is detected early or hasn’t spread extensively.

Our team evaluates your scan results, tumour size, location, and overall health to determine whether laparoscopic surgery is the right option or if another approach would work better for you.
We aim to create a targeted treatment plan tailored to your case that gives you the strongest chance at recovery.

Types
Procedure
Recovery

The right technique depends on where your cancer is located, how large it is, and what will work best for you. Here are the main approaches:

Standard multi-port laparoscopic surgery:
The most common method uses 3-5 small openings to insert a camera and specialised tools for clear visibility.

Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery:
The surgeon operates through a console, guiding robotic instruments with precision, especially useful for hard-to-reach areas.

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS):
All tools enter through one small opening near your belly button, leaving almost no visible scar.

Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS):
Combines laparoscopic tools with a hands-on approach for better control when handling larger or delicate tissue.

Laparoscopic surgery is straightforward, and there's nothing to be anxious about. Our team will walk you through everything, answer your questions, and make sure you feel prepared.

The entire procedure usually takes 2-4 hours, depending on the type and complexity of the cancer. You'll need to stop eating and drinking 8-12 hours before surgery to ensure your stomach is empty.

During the surgery, you'll be given general anaesthesia, so you'll be completely asleep and won't feel anything. Here’s how the laparoscopic surgery works:

The surgeon makes 3-5 small incisions in your abdomen.

A thin tube with a camera is inserted to give a clear view of the surgical area

Specialised instruments are used to remove the cancerous tissue carefully.

Once the tumour is removed, the incisions are closed with stitches or surgical glue.

After the procedure, you'll be moved to a recovery area where our team monitors you as the anaesthesia wears off. Some patients have drainage tubes temporarily to prevent fluid buildup. Most people stay in the hospital for 3-7 days, depending on how the body responds.

Recovery from laparoscopic surgery is generally faster than open surgery, but it still requires patience and time to heal from both inside and out. The small incisions heal quickly, but your digestive system takes longer to adjust, especially if part of your stomach or intestine was removed.

Most patients go home within a week and return to light activities in 2-3 weeks. Any discomfort is easily manageable with medications. But for your diet, you'll start with liquids and gradually move to solid foods as your body heals.

Full recovery, including getting back to work and normal routines, typically takes 4-6 weeks, depending on the type of surgery you had.

Swelling or a feeling of tightness in the breast

Some discomfort or soreness, especially early on

Bruising or numb areas around the breast or donor site

Tiredness as your body recovers

Scars that look more noticeable before they fade with time

Your care team will check in regularly, guide you on what to do and what to avoid, and support you through each stage of recovery.

Risks and Complications

Like any surgery, laparoscopic cancer surgery carries some risks, though they’re generally lower than with open procedures.

  • Bleeding: Internal bleeding may require additional intervention.
  • Infection: Incision sites or internal areas can become infected.
  • Anastomotic leak: If bowel or stomach segments are reconnected, leaks can occur at the anastomosis.
  • Blood clots: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism is possible, though rare.
  • Damage to surrounding organs: Nearby structures, such as the spleen, bladder, or blood vessels, may be affected.
  • Conversion to open surgery: If complications arise, the surgeon may need to switch to open surgery.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise these risks and monitors you closely throughout your recovery.

Frequently asked questions

How long does laparoscopic GI cancer surgery take?

It typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the cancer type and complexity of the tumour.

Will I have visible scars after laparoscopic surgery?

You’ll have small scars from the incisions (usually 0.5-1 cm each), which fade significantly over time and are much smaller than open surgery scars.

Can laparoscopic surgery treat advanced GI cancers?

It depends on the stage and spread of the cancer. Early-stage cancers respond best to laparoscopic techniques, but your surgeon will assess your specific case.

What's the main advantage of laparoscopic surgery over open surgery?

Smaller incisions mean less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and lower risk of complications like infections.
