Head and neck surgery with reconstruction

Advanced head and neck cancer surgery combines precise tumour removal with reconstruction to preserve appearance, function, and quality of life whenever possible.

Our surgeons treat complex cancers involving the parotid, thyroid, oral cavity, and larynx, using reconstructive and microvascular techniques when tissue defects need to be restored.

Overview

Removing cancer while restoring function and appearance

Head and neck cancers can affect areas such as the parotid gland, thyroid, oral cavity, and larynx. Surgery must remove the cancer while protecting important nerves and structures whenever possible. When removal creates a significant defect, reconstructive surgery can restore the affected area’s structure, function, and appearance.

Reconstruction may use nearby tissue or free flaps taken from another part of the body. These tissues are connected to blood vessels in the neck using microsurgical techniques. For selected laryngeal cancers requiring removal of the voice box, voice prostheses can help suitable patients communicate after surgery.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The right approach depends on the cancer’s location, extent, affected structures, and whether reconstruction is needed to restore function and appearance.

01

Parotid Surgery

Removes part or all of the parotid gland while carefully identifying and preserving facial nerve branches whenever possible.

02

Thyroid Surgery

Removes part or all of the thyroid depending on the condition, while protecting the nerves and glands controlling vocal cords and calcium levels.

03

Oral Cavity Surgery

Removes the cancer with an appropriate margin of normal tissue while planning reconstruction to restore structure and function.

04

Free-Flap Reconstruction

Uses tissue from another part of the body to reconstruct defects, connecting its blood vessels to vessels in the neck through microvascular surgery.

05

Laryngeal Surgery

Removes the voice box when necessary and may include placement of a voice prosthesis to support speech after surgery.

Your surgical team will assess the cancer, review imaging, plan the required procedure, and determine whether reconstruction is needed after tumour removal.

During surgery, the cancer is removed with appropriate margins while important nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding structures are protected whenever possible. Reconstruction is performed when removal creates a significant defect.

General anaesthesia is used, so you remain asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Step 1

The surgeon assesses the tumour and identifies important nerves, vessels, and surrounding structures.

Step 2

The cancer is removed with appropriate margins while protecting vital structures whenever possible.

Step 3

A reconstructive technique is selected according to the size and location of the defect.

Step 4

Free-flap tissue may be connected to neck blood vessels using microsurgical techniques.

After surgery, you’ll be monitored closely as the anaesthesia wears off. Your team will assess pain, breathing, swallowing, wound healing, and reconstruction. Recovery depends on the cancer treated, extent of surgery, reconstruction performed, and how your body responds.

Recovery after head and neck surgery varies depending on the cancer, extent of surgery, and whether reconstruction was required. Your team monitors healing, breathing, swallowing, nutrition, speech, and wound recovery while gradually helping you return to everyday activities.

Early recovery may involve swelling, soreness, tiredness, and changes in swallowing or speech. Your care team will guide wound care, nutrition, movement, medication, and rehabilitation according to the procedure performed.

Recovery time varies depending on the surgery, reconstruction, your overall health, and any additional cancer treatment required.

Regular follow-up helps monitor healing, reconstruction, speech, swallowing, pathology results, and your next steps in treatment.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any major surgery, head and neck procedures carry risks that vary with the operation and cancer.

01

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur during or after head and neck surgery.

02

Infection

The surgical site or reconstructed tissue can become infected during recovery.

03

Nerve injury

Nerve involvement or injury can cause weakness or changes in function.

04

Swallowing or speech changes

Surgery may temporarily or permanently affect swallowing, speech, or other functions.

05

Reconstruction complications

Reconstructed tissue may experience healing or blood-supply complications.

06

Voice changes

Laryngeal surgery can permanently affect natural voice and may require voice rehabilitation.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your recovery.
