Cytoreductive surgery & HIPEC

Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC combine tumour removal with heated chemotherapy to treat selected cancers that have spread within the abdominal cavity.

Our specialists treat peritoneal surface malignancies using advanced surgical techniques designed to remove visible disease and target remaining microscopic cancer cells.

Overview

Removing visible cancer and treating microscopic disease

Cytoreductive surgery removes visible cancer deposits from the abdominal cavity and may involve removing affected areas of the peritoneum and other organs when necessary. The goal is to achieve complete or near-complete removal of visible disease before treating microscopic cancer cells.

HIPEC delivers heated chemotherapy directly into the abdomen after cytoreductive surgery. This allows chemotherapy to act locally against remaining microscopic cancer cells. The approach may be considered for selected colorectal, appendiceal, ovarian, gastric, and other peritoneal surface malignancies.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The treatment approach depends on the cancer type, extent of peritoneal spread, overall health, and whether complete cytoreduction can be achieved.

01

Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS)

Removes visible tumour deposits from the peritoneum and affected abdominal organs to achieve maximum possible tumour clearance.

02

HIPEC

Delivers heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity after visible cancer has been surgically removed.

03

PIPAC

Delivers pressurised chemotherapy as an aerosol directly into the abdominal cavity for selected recurrent peritoneal cancers.

04

Multivisceral Resection

May involve removing multiple affected abdominal organs when required to achieve complete cytoreduction.

Your team will assess the extent of peritoneal disease, review imaging, discuss treatment options, and determine whether CRS and HIPEC are appropriate.

During cytoreductive surgery, visible tumour deposits are carefully removed from the abdominal cavity. Depending on disease spread, affected sections of the peritoneum, bowel, or other organs may also require removal.

After cytoreduction, heated chemotherapy is circulated directly through the abdominal cavity.

Step 1

The surgical team assesses the extent and distribution of cancer inside the abdomen.

Step 2

Visible tumour deposits and affected tissue are carefully removed during cytoreduction.

Step 3

The abdomen is prepared for delivery of heated chemotherapy after tumour removal.

Step 4

The abdomen is prepared for delivery of heated chemotherapy after tumour removal.

After HIPEC, the chemotherapy is removed and the surgical procedure is completed. You’ll be monitored closely after surgery, with your team assessing pain, nutrition, bowel function, wound healing, and overall recovery. Hospital stay depends on the extent of surgery and your individual response.

Recovery after cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC can take time because the procedure may involve extensive abdominal surgery. Your team closely monitors nutrition, bowel function, wound healing, mobility, pain, and overall strength while gradually supporting your return to daily activities.

Early recovery may include tiredness, abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite, and changes in bowel function. Your care team will gradually guide nutrition, movement, wound care, medication, and activity as your body heals.

Recovery varies significantly depending on the extent of cytoreduction, organs treated, overall health, and additional cancer treatment.

Regular follow-up helps monitor healing, pathology results, cancer response, nutrition, and your next steps in treatment.

Risks

Risks and complications

CRS and HIPEC is major surgery, with risks depending on disease extent and the procedures required.

01

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur during or after extensive abdominal surgery.

02

Infection

Surgical wounds or internal areas can become infected during recovery.

03

Bowel complications

Bowel surgery can cause leaks, obstruction, or changes in bowel function.

04

Organ complications

Removing affected organs can lead to complications related to the organs treated.

05

Blood clots

Major abdominal surgery can increase the risk of blood clots.

06

Chemotherapy effects

HIPEC can cause side effects related to chemotherapy and the intensity of treatment.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your recovery.
