Surgeon marking the breast before breast cancer surgery
Advanced breast surgery

Advanced breast surgery options

Advanced breast surgery techniques help surgeons precisely locate and remove breast lumps while aiming for complete excision and good cosmetic outcomes.

Our surgeons use wire-guided and ultrasound-guided techniques to accurately locate breast lumps and remove them with appropriate margins while carefully planning the surgical approach.

Overview

Precise removal of breast lumps

Breast lumps may sometimes be located deep within the breast tissue, making precise localisation important before surgery. Wire-guided or ultrasound-guided techniques help surgeons identify the lump accurately and remove the targeted area while aiming for complete excision and appropriate margins.

For deep or difficult-to-localise lumps, a wire may be positioned before surgery to guide excision. Ultrasound can also be used to locate and mark a lump accurately. The removed specimen is sent for histopathology to confirm the diagnosis and assess whether the lump has been completely removed.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The right technique depends on the lump’s location, depth, visibility on imaging, and the most accurate way to guide its complete surgical removal.

01

Wire Guided Excision

Uses a wire placed before surgery to precisely mark a deep breast lump and guide wide excision of the targeted area.

02

USG Guided Excision

Uses ultrasound imaging to locate and mark the breast lump before surgery, helping the surgeon accurately remove the targeted tissue.

Your surgical team will review your imaging, locate the lump, explain the planned technique, and prepare you for precise breast lump excision.

For a deep lump, a wire may be placed before surgery to mark its exact location. Ultrasound may also guide localisation when the lump can be identified clearly.

The procedure is performed under anaesthesia, keeping you comfortable throughout the surgery.

Step 1

Imaging is used to identify and precisely locate the breast lump.

Step 2

A wire or ultrasound guidance marks the targeted area before excision.

Step 3

The surgeon removes the lump and surrounding tissue with appropriate margins.

Step 4

The specimen is sent for histopathology to confirm complete removal and diagnosis.

After surgery, you’ll be monitored in recovery as the anaesthesia wears off. Your team will provide wound-care instructions and monitor healing. The removed specimen is examined by histopathology, helping confirm the diagnosis and whether the lump has been completely excised.

Recovery after breast lump excision is generally straightforward. You may experience mild soreness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness around the surgical area. Your team will guide wound care and activity while monitoring healing and helping you understand your histopathology results.

You can usually return gradually to normal daily activities as discomfort settles. Follow your wound-care instructions, take prescribed medication when needed, and avoid strenuous activity until your surgical team advises that healing is sufficient.

Recovery varies depending on the extent of tissue removed and your individual healing process.

Follow-up appointments help review healing, discuss histopathology results, and determine whether any further treatment or monitoring is needed.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any surgery, breast lump excision carries risks, although most are manageable with appropriate care.

01

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur around the surgical site after the procedure.

02

Infection

The incision or surrounding tissue can become infected during healing.

03

Scarring

A scar may develop around the surgical incision as the wound heals.

04

Breast shape changes

Removing breast tissue may cause changes in breast shape or appearance.

05

Numbness

Temporary or lasting changes in sensation may occur around the surgical area.

06

Incomplete excision

Further treatment may sometimes be needed if the lump is not completely removed.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your recovery.
