Advanced colorectal surgery

Colorectal cancer surgery

Advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery treats colon and rectal cancer with precise tumour removal while helping preserve healthy bowel function.

Our colorectal surgeons use advanced techniques to remove tumours accurately, preserve function, and provide personalised treatment based on your cancer.

Overview

Advanced surgery for colon and rectal cancer

Laparoscopic and robotic surgery are widely used to treat colon and rectal cancer. Magnified vision and specialised instruments make difficult areas easier to access, helping surgeons remove tumours with good margins while preserving healthy bowel and surrounding structures whenever possible.

For rectal cancers, advanced techniques can help preserve the anal sphincter and potentially avoid a permanent stoma in selected patients. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation, precise surgery, or specialised procedures depending on the cancer’s stage, location, and spread.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The right technique depends on your cancer’s location, stage, spread, and whether laparoscopic, robotic, transanal, or other specialised surgery is most suitable for you.

01

Laparoscopic / Robotic Surgery

Uses magnified vision and specialised instruments to remove colon and rectal tumours with precision.

02

Sphincter-Saving Surgery

Advanced techniques may help preserve the anal sphincter and avoid a permanent stoma in selected patients.

03

Transanal Surgery

Early rectal cancers confined to the mucosa can sometimes be removed directly through the anal opening.

04

Lateral Pelvic Node Dissection

Removes affected pelvic lymph nodes using open, laparoscopic, or robotic techniques when clinically required.

05

Cytoreductive Surgery + HIPEC

Removes visible abdominal cancer deposits, followed by heated chemotherapy delivered directly into the abdomen.

Your surgical team will explain the planned procedure, answer your questions, and prepare you for surgery based on your cancer and treatment approach.

During surgery, the tumour is removed with appropriate margins. Depending on your cancer, the surgeon may also remove nearby lymph nodes or affected sections of bowel.

General anaesthesia keeps you asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Step 1

The surgeon accesses the affected area using laparoscopic, robotic, transanal, or open techniques.

Step 2

Magnified vision helps identify the tumour, surrounding structures, and lymph nodes requiring treatment.

Step 3

The tumour and affected tissue are removed with appropriate margins to achieve complete cancer clearance.

Step 4

The bowel is reconnected when possible, or a temporary or permanent stoma may be created.

Your recovery and hospital stay depend on the type and extent of surgery performed. Your team will monitor bowel function, wound healing, pain, nutrition, and overall progress before discharge, while providing clear instructions for activity, diet, medication, and follow-up care.

Recovery after colorectal surgery takes time and varies according to the procedure performed. Your team monitors bowel function, pain, nutrition, wound healing, and mobility while your body adjusts after surgery. Recovery may take longer after more extensive procedures or combined cancer treatments.

You’ll gradually return to eating, walking, and normal activities as your recovery progresses. Your team will guide you on wound care, medication, diet, activity, and any changes needed after bowel surgery.

Recovery time varies depending on the surgery, your overall health, and whether additional cancer treatment is required.

Regular follow-up helps monitor healing, bowel function, pathology results, and your next steps in cancer treatment.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any major surgery, colorectal procedures carry risks that depend on the operation and your overall health.

01

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur during or after colorectal surgery.

02

Infection

Surgical wounds or internal areas can become infected during recovery.

03

Anastomotic leak

A leak can occur where bowel segments are reconnected.

04

Bowel changes

Surgery may temporarily affect bowel movements and digestive function.

05

Stoma

Some patients may require a temporary or permanent stoma after surgery.

06

Blood clots

Surgery can increase the risk of blood clots during recovery.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your recovery.
