Colon cancer surgery & colectomy

Colectomy removes the cancerous part of the colon along with nearby lymph nodes and healthy bowel margins to achieve effective cancer clearance.

Our surgeons perform right, transverse, and left colectomies using laparoscopic, robotic, or open techniques depending on the cancer’s location, spread, and surgical requirements.

Overview

Removing colon cancer with precision

Colon cancer surgery removes the affected segment of the large intestine along with healthy bowel margins and nearby lymph nodes. Removing these lymph nodes helps accurately stage the cancer and guide further treatment. The surgical approach depends on where the tumour is located and how extensively it has affected the colon.

Complete mesocolic excision removes the tumour along with the surrounding mesocolic fascia and associated lymph nodes. Depending on the tumour location, surgery may involve a right hemicolectomy, transverse colectomy, extended right hemicolectomy, or left hemicolectomy, with the bowel reconnected when appropriate.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The right technique depends on the tumour’s location, extent, lymph-node involvement, and whether laparoscopic, robotic, or open surgery is most appropriate.

01

Right Colectomy

Removes the right colon, hepatic flexure, part of the transverse colon, and nearby lymph nodes for right-sided colon cancers.

02

Transverse Colectomy

Removes the transverse colon and surrounding structures when cancer is located in the transverse colon.

03

Extended Right Hemicolectomy

Removes the right colon and entire transverse colon when wider margins are required for transverse colon cancer.

04

Left Colectomy

Removes the descending colon and left side of the transverse colon for left-sided colon cancers.

05

Laparoscopic / Robotic Surgery

Uses minimally invasive techniques for most suitable colon cancers, supporting less pain, earlier recovery, reduced blood loss, and shorter hospital stays.

Your surgical team will assess the tumour, review imaging and plan the appropriate colectomy based on its location, extent, and lymph-node involvement.

During surgery, the affected section of colon is removed along with appropriate bowel margins and the lymph nodes draining that segment to support complete cancer removal and accurate staging.

General anaesthesia is used, so you remain asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Step 1

The surgeon identifies the tumour and the section of colon requiring removal.

Step 2

The affected bowel segment and its draining lymph nodes are carefully mobilised.

Step 3

The cancerous segment is removed with appropriate margins and surrounding lymph nodes.

Step 4

The remaining bowel is reconnected to restore continuity whenever clinically appropriate.

After surgery, you’ll be monitored closely as the anaesthesia wears off. Your team will assess pain, bowel function, wound healing, nutrition, and overall recovery. Hospital stay and recovery depend on the type of colectomy performed and how your body responds.

Recovery after colectomy varies depending on the type of surgery and your overall health. Minimally invasive surgery can support earlier bowel recovery, less pain, reduced blood loss, and a shorter hospital stay compared with more extensive approaches. Your care team guides you through each stage of healing.

You’ll gradually return to eating, walking, and everyday activities as your bowel recovers. Your team will guide wound care, medication, nutrition, activity, and follow-up while monitoring bowel function and your overall progress.

Recovery time depends on the operation performed, your health, and whether additional cancer treatment is required.

Regular follow-up helps monitor healing, bowel function, pathology results, and the next steps in your cancer treatment.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any major surgery, colectomy carries risks that depend on the procedure and your overall health.

01

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur during or after colon surgery.

02

Infection

Surgical wounds or internal areas can become infected during recovery.

03

Anastomotic leak

A leak can occur where the remaining bowel is reconnected.

04

Bowel changes

Bowel movements and digestive function may temporarily change after surgery.

05

Blood clots

Major surgery can increase the risk of blood clots during recovery.

06

Stoma

Some patients may require a temporary or permanent stoma depending on the operation.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your recovery.
