Breast conservation surgery

Breast conservation surgery removes the cancerous tumour while preserving the rest of your breast, offering a focused treatment option.

Our surgical oncologists assess your tumour, breast size, health and treatment needs to create a personalised surgical plan.

Overview

Removing the tumour while preserving your breast

Breast conservation surgery removes the cancerous tumour along with a margin of healthy tissue, while leaving the rest of your breast intact. It is commonly used for early-stage breast cancer when the tumour is small relative to breast size and can be removed without significantly changing the breast’s shape.

Your suitability depends on factors including tumour size, location, breast size, overall health, and whether the cancer has spread. Our surgical oncologists assess these details carefully and explain whether breast conservation is appropriate, helping you understand the procedure, expected results, and the next steps in your treatment.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The technique depends on the tumour size, location, and amount of tissue that needs removal. Your surgeon will recommend the approach best suited to your case.

01

Wide Local Excision

Removes the tumour along with a margin of healthy tissue to help ensure all cancer cells are cleared.

02

Partial Mastectomy

Removes a larger portion of breast tissue with the tumour when it is bigger or wider margins are needed.

03

Oncoplasty

Reshapes remaining breast tissue after tumour removal to maintain a natural appearance without implants.

Before surgery, your team discusses the surgical plan, reviews your medical history, answers your questions, and explains fasting and medication instructions.

The procedure typically takes 1–2 hours. On the day of surgery, an IV line is placed, and the tumour site may be marked using wire localisation or dye if the lump cannot be felt.

You’ll receive general anaesthesia, so you remain completely asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Step 1

An IV line is placed for anaesthesia and fluids before surgery begins.

Step 2

If the lump cannot be felt, its location is marked using wire localisation or dye.

Step 3

The surgeon removes the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue and sends samples for pathology.

Step 4

If needed, oncoplasty reshapes the breast before the incision is closed with sutures.

After surgery, you’ll wake up in recovery with some soreness, swelling, and bruising. Most patients go home the same day. Your team provides pain medication and wound-care instructions. Light activities can resume within a few days, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided.

Recovery after breast conservation surgery is generally straightforward. You may experience soreness, swelling, and bruising during the first few days. Most patients go home the same day and gradually return to normal activities while following wound-care instructions and avoiding strenuous activity during the early healing period.

You can usually resume light activities within a few days. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 4–6 weeks. Pain medication can help manage discomfort, while proper wound care supports healing and helps you recover comfortably.

Most patients feel back to normal within a month, although recovery varies depending on individual healing and treatment needs.

Follow-up appointments monitor healing, review pathology results, and discuss radiation therapy or other treatments needed after surgery.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any surgery, breast conservation carries some risks, though most are rare and manageable.

01

Bleeding or infection

Bleeding or infection can occur around the surgical site.

02

Breast shape changes

Removing tissue may cause changes in breast shape or size.

03

Scarring

Scarring may develop around the incision area during healing.

04

Numbness or tingling

Numbness or tingling may occur in the breast or underarm temporarily or permanently.

05

Seroma

Fluid can collect under the skin and may sometimes require drainage.

06

Positive margins

Cancer cells at the margin may require another surgery to remove additional tissue.

07

Lymphedema

Arm swelling can occur if lymph nodes are removed during treatment.

We monitor you closely during recovery and address any concerns immediately.
