Breast reconstruction after cancer

Breast reconstruction can restore breast shape after cancer surgery, with options planned around your treatment, body, recovery, and personal choice.

Our team offers implant-based, tissue-based, and combined reconstruction, coordinating your surgery with cancer treatment while supporting you through recovery.

Overview

Restoring breast shape after cancer surgery

Breast reconstruction surgery restores the appearance of the breast after cancer surgery, usually following mastectomy. It recreates a breast mound and can improve symmetry with the other breast, helping you feel more comfortable and confident with your body after treatment.

Reconstruction may use implants, tissue from your own body, or both. Depending on your cancer treatment plan and personal choice, it can be performed during breast surgery or planned for a later stage, with timing tailored carefully to your treatment and recovery.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

Breast reconstruction works best when planned around your body, cancer treatment, available tissue, and personal preferences. Your specialists guide you through each option.

01

Implant-Based Reconstruction

Uses a breast implant to recreate breast shape, sometimes in stages, when treatment and healthy skin permit.

02

Tissue-Based Reconstruction

Uses tissue from your abdomen or back to create a breast with a more natural feel.

03

Combined Reconstruction

Uses your own tissue and an implant when additional volume or shape support is needed.

Before surgery, your team reviews your cancer treatment plan, examines you, discusses reconstruction options, and explains timing, expected outcomes, preparation, and recovery.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes 2–6 hours, depending on the reconstruction type and whether it is combined with cancer surgery.

After surgery, you are monitored closely. Drains may be placed temporarily, depending on your reconstruction.

Step 1

Your oncologist reviews your treatment plan and discusses the reconstruction approach best suited to you.

Step 2

Pre-surgery tests are completed, with guidance on medications, preparation, and lifestyle adjustments.

Step 3

Reconstruction is performed under general anaesthesia using implants, your own tissue, or both.

Step 4

The reconstructed breast is shaped and the surgical sites are closed before recovery begins.

After surgery, you’ll be monitored closely as the anaesthesia wears off. Drains may be placed temporarily to manage fluid. Your hospital stay depends on the reconstruction type. Follow-up visits are planned to assess healing, provide recovery guidance, and discuss any further treatment or procedures that may be needed.

Recovery after breast reconstruction takes time. Most people return to light daily activities within a few weeks, while the breast and donor site continue healing over several months. Changes in shape, softness, and overall appearance happen gradually as everything settles.

Early recovery may include swelling, tightness, soreness, bruising, numbness, tiredness, and visible scars. These changes can feel concerning initially but usually improve gradually as your body heals and the reconstructed breast settles.

Your care team guides movement, wound care, follow-up, and what to avoid during recovery and healing.

Most patients stay around 2–3 days in hospital, depending on reconstruction type, and receive clear follow-up guidance after discharge.

Risks

Risks and complications

Every surgery carries risks, and breast reconstruction has specific complications that your team will explain beforehand.

01

Infection

Infection or delayed wound healing can occur after reconstruction.

02

Bleeding or fluid

Bleeding or fluid build-up can occur around the surgical area.

03

Changes in sensation

Numbness or other changes in sensation may occur during healing.

04

Implant complications

Implant-related problems can occur when implants are used for reconstruction.

05

Tissue healing concerns

Tissue-based reconstruction may involve healing concerns at the donor or reconstructed site.

06

Radiation effects

Radiation therapy can affect healing and the final reconstruction results.
