Squamous Cell Carcinoma
The most common type of cervical cancer. It begins in the thin, flat cells lining the outer surface of the cervix.
Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix and is often associated with persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Early detection and appropriate treatment can play an important role in managing the disease.
Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the cervix grow uncontrollably and form a tumour. Most cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with certain high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV).
Cervical cancer develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. At SSO Hospitals, patients receive comprehensive cervical cancer care, from screening and diagnosis to staging, personalised treatment planning, surgery and follow-up care.
Cervical cancer usually develops gradually. Precancerous changes in cervical cells can occur before invasive cancer develops. Regular cervical screening can help identify these changes and allow treatment before they progress to cancer.
Understanding the symptoms, risk factors, stages and treatment options for cervical cancer can help support timely evaluation and informed cancer care.
Persistent infection with high-risk HPV can cause changes in the cells of the cervix. In some women, these abnormal cells can progress over several years from precancerous changes to cervical cancer. Not every HPV infection leads to cancer, and most HPV infections clear naturally.
Early cervical cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms. As the disease progresses, possible cervical cancer symptoms may include:
Before invasive cervical cancer develops, cells on the cervix may undergo abnormal changes known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). These changes are not the same as invasive cancer, but some higher-grade abnormalities can progress if left untreated.
Cervical screening and appropriate follow-up can help detect these changes early. Depending on the findings, treatment may include procedures such as LEEP, LLETZ or cone biopsy.
Cervical cancer is staged according to how far the cancer has spread from the cervix. Staging helps doctors determine the extent of disease and plan treatment.
Confined to the cervix: Cancer is limited to the cervix.
Spread beyond the cervix: Cancer has spread beyond the cervix but remains within the pelvic region.
Further local or lymph-node spread: Cancer has spread to the lower vagina, pelvic sidewall and/or nearby lymph nodes.
Spread to distant or nearby organs: Cancer has spread beyond the pelvis and may involve nearby organs such as the bladder or rectum, or distant organs.
Cervical cancer staging has further subdivisions. The exact stage is determined by the treating team using clinical examination, imaging, pathology and other relevant findings.
Cervical cancers are classified according to the type of cell in which they begin. The two most common types are:
The most common type of cervical cancer. It begins in the thin, flat cells lining the outer surface of the cervix.
A cervical cancer that develops from glandular cells in the cervical canal.
A less common cancer containing features of both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
Less common types include neuroendocrine and other rare cervical cancers. Their treatment depends on the specific pathology and biological characteristics.
Cervical cancer diagnosis may involve screening, clinical examination, imaging and tissue testing.
Tests such as the HPV test and Pap test can identify high-risk HPV infection or abnormal cervical cells.
A colposcopy allows the doctor to examine the cervix more closely when screening results are abnormal.
A small tissue sample may be taken from the cervix and examined under a microscope to confirm cancer.
Imaging tests such as MRI, CT or PET-CT may be used to assess the extent of the disease and look for spread.
The confirmed cancer is assessed to determine its stage and guide treatment planning.
An abnormal cervical screening result does not necessarily mean that you have cervical cancer. Further evaluation is required to determine the cause of the abnormality.
Persistent infection with high-risk HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer. Several factors can increase the likelihood that an HPV infection will persist or contribute to cervical cancer development. HPV infection is extremely common and does not mean that a person will develop cervical cancer. Most HPV infections clear naturally. Persistent high-risk HPV infection is the key risk factor for cervical cancer.
Persistent infection with high-risk HPV types is the major risk factor for cervical cancer.
Not undergoing recommended cervical screening can allow precancerous changes to go undetected.
Certain sexual and reproductive factors can influence cervical cancer risk.
A history of cervical precancerous changes can increase the risk of developing cervical cancer.
Treatment for cervical cancer depends on the stage, tumour characteristics and the individual's overall health. Depending on the situation, treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or a combination of treatments.
Cervical Cancer Treatment
Treatment is planned individually based on the stage and characteristics of the cancer. A multidisciplinary cancer team determines the most appropriate treatment approach.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common infection transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin or sexual contact. Certain high-risk HPV types can cause persistent changes in cervical cells that may eventually develop into cancer.
HPV vaccination can help protect against the HPV types responsible for many cervical cancers. Vaccination does not replace cervical screening, because it does not protect against every HPV type that can cause cancer.
Cervical screening can identify high-risk HPV infection and abnormal cervical cells before invasive cervical cancer develops. Depending on the screening programme, screening may involve an HPV test, Pap test or both.
Screening recommendations vary according to age, previous screening results, vaccination status and individual risk. Follow the screening schedule recommended by your healthcare professional.
Some cervical cancer treatments can affect fertility, sexual function and hormonal health. Selected women with early-stage disease may be eligible for fertility-sparing treatment. Your care team can discuss fertility preservation, menopause, sexual health and other treatment-related concerns before treatment begins.
Cervical cancer prognosis varies between individuals. Factors include the stage at diagnosis, tumour size, lymph node involvement, tumour type, response to treatment and whether the cancer has spread beyond the cervix.
Survival statistics describe outcomes in groups of patients and cannot predict an individual patient's outcome. Your treating team can explain prognosis based on your specific diagnosis, stage and response to treatment.
Cervical cancer is one of the cancers for which prevention and early detection can play an important role. HPV vaccination can reduce the risk of infection with cancer-causing HPV types, while regular cervical screening can identify precancerous changes before they develop into invasive cancer.
Abnormal vaginal bleeding, unusual discharge or persistent pelvic symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Cervical cancer care may involve screening, diagnosis, surgery, radiation, systemic treatment and follow-up. SSO Hospitals brings together specialists across disciplines to support coordinated cancer care.
