Chemoport insertion

A chemoport provides reliable long-term access to your bloodstream, making repeated chemotherapy and other cancer treatments easier and more comfortable.

The small implanted device sits beneath the skin and connects to a vein, allowing medicines to be delivered safely without repeated peripheral IV insertions.

Overview

A simpler way to receive repeated cancer treatment

A chemoport is a small medical device implanted beneath the skin and connected to a large vein. It provides reliable access to the bloodstream for patients who need repeated chemotherapy or other intravenous treatments, reducing the need for repeated needle insertions into smaller veins.

The port remains beneath the skin when it is not being used. During treatment, a special needle accesses the port to deliver medicines or fluids directly into the bloodstream. Your oncology team decides whether a chemoport is appropriate based on your treatment plan and expected treatment duration.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The port and insertion approach are selected according to your treatment needs, venous access, medical history, and the safest suitable placement site.

01

Implanted Chemoport

Places a small reservoir beneath the skin and connects it to a large vein for repeated treatment access.

02

Ultrasound-Guided Venous Access

Uses ultrasound to help identify the vein and support accurate placement during the procedure.

03

Image-Guided Port Placement

Imaging may help confirm catheter position and ensure the port is correctly positioned before use.

Your team will review your treatment plan, assess your veins and medical history, and explain how the chemoport will be placed and used.

The port is inserted through a small incision beneath the skin and connected to a catheter placed inside a large vein. Imaging may be used to guide placement.

Local anaesthesia and medication are used to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

Step 1

The insertion site is cleaned, prepared, and numbed with local anaesthesia.

Step 2

A catheter is carefully placed into a large vein using image guidance.

Step 3

The catheter is connected to the small port placed beneath your skin.

Step 4

The port is secured, the incision is closed, and its position is checked.

After the procedure, you’ll be monitored briefly before going home when your team confirms you are comfortable and stable. Your port can then be accessed using a special needle whenever chemotherapy or other intravenous treatment is required.

Recovery after chemoport insertion is usually straightforward. You may experience mild soreness, bruising, or tenderness around the insertion site for a few days. Your team will explain how to care for the wound and when the port can be used for treatment.

Most patients can gradually return to normal activities after the procedure. Keep the insertion area clean and follow your team’s instructions about wound care, movement, medication, and when to seek medical attention.

Discomfort usually settles as the area heals, although recovery varies between individuals.

Your oncology team will monitor the port during treatment and check for any signs of infection or other complications.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any procedure, chemoport insertion carries some risks, although serious complications are uncommon.

01

Infection

An infection can develop around the port or catheter.

02

Bleeding

Minor bleeding or bruising can occur around the insertion site.

03

Blood clot

A blood clot may develop around the catheter or affected vein.

04

Catheter problems

The catheter can occasionally move, block, or stop working correctly.

05

Vessel injury

The vein or nearby structures can rarely be injured during placement.

06

Port complications

The port may occasionally become damaged, displaced, or require removal.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your treatment.
