Esophageal cancer surgery

Esophageal cancer surgery

Esophageal cancer surgery removes the tumour and affected tissue while aiming to preserve swallowing function and restore digestive continuity.

Our surgeons use advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive approaches for suitable patients, to treat esophageal cancers according to tumour location, stage, and individual needs.

Overview

Removing esophageal cancer with precision

Esophageal cancer surgery involves removing the tumour along with a portion of the affected oesophagus and nearby lymph nodes when appropriate. The remaining digestive tract is then reconstructed to restore continuity, allowing food to pass from the oesophagus into the stomach or reconstructed digestive pathway.

The surgical approach depends on where the tumour is located, its size and stage, and whether surrounding structures are involved. Selected patients may undergo minimally invasive or robotic surgery, while open surgery may be recommended when more extensive treatment is required.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The right approach depends on the tumour’s location, stage, surrounding structures, overall health, and whether minimally invasive surgery is suitable.

01

Esophagectomy

Removes the cancerous portion of the oesophagus along with appropriate margins and nearby lymph nodes.

02

Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy

Uses small incisions, specialised instruments, and a camera to perform esophageal cancer surgery with less surgical trauma.

03

Robotic Esophageal Surgery

Uses robotic instruments and magnified three-dimensional vision to support precise dissection in difficult anatomical areas.

04

Open Esophagectomy

Uses larger surgical incisions when extensive tumour removal or reconstruction requires an open approach.

Your surgical team will review imaging, assess the tumour, explain the planned approach, and prepare you for esophageal cancer surgery.

During surgery, the affected portion of the oesophagus is removed with appropriate margins and nearby lymph nodes. The remaining digestive tract is then reconstructed to restore continuity.

General anaesthesia is used, so you remain asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Step 1

The surgeon identifies the tumour and plans access according to its location.

Step 2

The affected oesophagus and nearby lymph nodes are carefully mobilised.

Step 3

The tumour is removed with appropriate margins to achieve complete cancer clearance.

Step 4

The digestive tract is reconstructed to restore a pathway for food.

After surgery, you’ll be monitored closely in recovery. Your team will assess breathing, pain, nutrition, swallowing, and wound healing. Hospital stay and recovery depend on the extent of surgery, reconstruction performed, your overall health, and how your body responds.

Recovery after esophageal surgery takes time because your digestive system needs to adjust after reconstruction. Your team will closely monitor swallowing, nutrition, breathing, wound healing, and strength while gradually helping you return to eating and normal daily activities.

You may initially receive nutrition through a feeding tube while the reconstructed digestive tract heals. Your team will gradually introduce oral feeding and guide you through diet, movement, wound care, medication, and rehabilitation.

Recovery varies depending on the operation, reconstruction, overall health, and whether additional cancer treatment is required.

Regular follow-up helps monitor swallowing, nutrition, healing, pathology results, and your next steps in cancer treatment.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any major surgery, esophageal procedures carry risks that vary with the operation and your overall health.

01

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur during or after esophageal surgery.

02

Infection

Surgical wounds or internal areas can become infected during recovery.

03

Anastomotic leak

A leak can occur where the reconstructed digestive tract is joined.

04

Breathing complications

Chest surgery can temporarily affect breathing and lung function.

05

Swallowing changes

Swallowing and digestive function may change during the recovery period.

06

Reflux

Changes to the digestive pathway can sometimes cause reflux or digestive discomfort.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise risks and closely monitors you throughout your recovery.

Why SSO?

At SSO Hospitals, specialised cancer surgery combines advanced techniques with careful treatment planning for patients undergoing complex esophageal procedures.

Our surgeons select minimally invasive, robotic, or open approaches according to tumour location, stage, anatomy, overall health, and the complexity of reconstruction required.

From diagnosis through recovery, your multidisciplinary team coordinates treatment, nutrition, rehabilitation, follow-up, and ongoing cancer care.
