Laparoscopic surgery for GI cancer

Advanced laparoscopic surgery treats gastrointestinal cancers through small incisions, reducing trauma while supporting precise tumour removal and faster recovery.

Our surgical oncologists specialise in gastrointestinal cancers, combining advanced technology and experience to deliver precise, minimally invasive treatment tailored to your case.

Overview

Removing cancer through a few small incisions

Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to remove cancerous tissue. For stomach, colon, rectal, or oesophageal cancers, it targets the tumour while protecting healthy tissue and minimising trauma. It works best when cancer is detected early or has not spread extensively.

Our team evaluates your scan results, tumour size, location, and overall health to determine whether laparoscopic surgery is appropriate or another approach would work better for you. We create a targeted treatment plan tailored to your case, giving you the strongest possible chance at recovery.

How it works

Techniques, the procedure and recovery

The right technique depends on where your cancer is located, how large it is, and what approach will work best for you.

01

Standard Multi-Port Laparoscopy

Uses 3–5 small openings to insert a camera and specialised instruments for clear visibility.

02

Robot-Assisted Laparoscopy

The surgeon controls robotic instruments through a console, providing precision for hard-to-reach areas.

03

Single-Incision Laparoscopy

All instruments enter through one small opening near the belly button, leaving minimal visible scarring.

04

Hand-Assisted Laparoscopy

Combines laparoscopic instruments with a hands-on approach for greater control around larger or delicate tissue.

Laparoscopic surgery is straightforward, and our team will guide you through each step, answer your questions, and help you feel prepared.

The procedure usually takes 2–4 hours, depending on the type and complexity of the cancer. You’ll need to stop eating and drinking 8–12 hours before surgery.

During surgery, you’ll receive general anaesthesia, so you’ll be completely asleep and won’t feel anything.

Step 1

The surgeon makes 3–5 small incisions in your abdomen.

Step 2

A thin tube with a camera provides a clear view of the surgical area.

Step 3

Specialised instruments are used to remove the cancerous tissue carefully.

Step 4

Once the tumour is removed, the incisions are closed with stitches or surgical glue.

After the procedure, you’ll be moved to a recovery area while our team monitors you as the anaesthesia wears off. Some patients may have temporary drainage tubes. Most people stay in hospital for 3–7 days, depending on how their body responds.

Recovery from laparoscopic surgery is generally faster than open surgery, but your body still needs time to heal. Small incisions heal quickly, while your digestive system may take longer to adjust, especially when part of the stomach or intestine has been removed.

Most patients go home within a week and return to light activities in 2–3 weeks. Discomfort is usually manageable with medication, while your diet may progress gradually from liquids to solid foods as your body heals.

Full recovery, including returning to work and normal routines, typically takes 4–6 weeks, depending on the type of surgery.

Your care team will guide you through diet, activity, wound care, follow-up appointments, and each stage of recovery.

Risks

Risks and complications

Like any surgery, laparoscopic cancer surgery carries some risks, though they’re generally lower than open procedures.

01

Bleeding

Internal bleeding may require additional intervention.

02

Infection

Incision sites or internal areas can become infected.

03

Anastomotic leak

Leaks can occur where bowel or stomach segments are reconnected.

04

Blood clots

Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism can occur, though rarely.

05

Organ damage

Nearby organs, blood vessels, or surrounding structures may be affected.

06

Open surgery conversion

Complications may require the surgeon to switch to open surgery.

Our team takes every precaution to minimise these risks and monitors you closely throughout your recovery.
